Do you envy Italian women ? Think they have it all by living in a beautiful country with fantastic weather, history, culture and food ?
But you will be surprised at how many are unhappy with their lives and regret getting married and having children.
A new survey of women in the five biggest European countries reveals that 75 per cent of Italian women are unhappy with their lives. Compare this to only 51 per cent in the UK.
One of the reasons for the unhappiness is the current economic crisis affecting Italy, but there are deeper concerns. The lack of help with childcare, often required if a mother wants to return to work is a problem. There are few playgroups and nurseries in many parts of Italy.
Plus it seems the Italian husband or partner is to blame for some of the women’s problems. Research shows that Italian men are not helpful in the home. Nearly all rely on others to do their laundry for them – a staggering 95 per cent have never emptied a washing machine !
Also, the image of an Italian man preparing fresh food and cooking a meal may also be wrong as 70 per cent have never used an oven.
Some of this lack of understanding could be because Italian men live at home until in their 30’s or later. Domestic work like cleaning, laundry, ironing, cooking are jobs which their mothers always do for them.
Once they marry and move in with their wife or live together with a girlfriend they do not adapt to the change and help with the work in the home.
The conclusion is that many Italian women are very busy doing housework and looking after children and they are very dissatisfied. They know that keeping a home clean and tidy, cooking and childcare can be tiring and time-consuming.
Perhaps the few that answered the survey positively are the ones that have done something to ease the problem. They have employed a housekeeper and/or a nanny. This gives them time and energy to do other things and some will have a job or career to follow.
