Residents in the small seaside resort of Calambrone in Tuscany, Italy are angry and upset about partygoers having illegal raves on the protected beach in the usually quiet and peaceful village.
The resort is on the western coast of Italy between Livorno and the famous tourist city of Pisa. The small beach is very important to the local people – tourism is a big provider of income for the beach clubs, restaurants, shops and hotels in the village.
Over 4,000 are expected to attend the next beach rave on Sunday, 28th August. It is being promoted on the internet, particularly on Facebook. The residents are worried about damage to the beach and their properties and have asked the Police for protection. One option the beach club owners have is to use private guards.
They fear a repeat of the rave on 15th August when partygoers wrecked sunbeds and umbrellas and smashed deck chairs to start fires on the beach. The raves are unsupervised and many that attend are youngsters, drinking large quantities of alcohol.
The following day the beach club owners and workers were angry when they arrived at the beach. It was littered with smashed equipment, bottles and rubbish. Hundreds of bags were filled to clean the beach and make it safe.
The residents and business owners are now hoping that the Police can block access roads to the beach when they know raves are to be held.
This year has seen an increase in raves and parties on Italy’s beaches. This is a problem for Italian families as millions use their summer vacation and weekends to visit the seaside resorts.
